At Group O’Dell, we have the privilege of working with all kinds of clients who move for a variety of reasons. Each with their own set of challenges and goals. Our opportunity lies in connecting, guiding, and educating our clients so they can make a great real estate investment and transition. We want to thank YOU for connecting us to great people.
This month, meet the Jimenez family.
Where are you from originally?
Eric: Alba and I were born and raised in Dominican Republic in different parts of the island. Alba from the countryside, Moca, and I came from the capital, Santo Domingo. We started our family in Santo Domingo with two of our children being born there. We left everything we knew in Santo Domingo, packed our lives in six suitcases and moved to Louisville KY to pursue a master in theology while continuing my career in marketing and communications. Alba, who is a visual artist, was insane enough to put it all on hold and support me in what was supposed to be a season but turned into the start our new lives. Time flew by and our kids kept multiplying. Very quickly two became four!
What brought you to Kansas City?
Alba: Eric was sought out by a national non-profit organization called Made to Flourish based in Kansas City. Made to Flourish works with pastors and churches to help them make a better connection between Sunday faith and Monday work. They desire to have people see the beauty of work in the context of the biblical storyline and how God considers work and economic activity meaningful for human flourishing and the common good. The work at Made to Flourish resonated for Eric. The only thing I knew of Kansas was the Wizard of Oz, which terrified me because of tornadoes.
When we found ourselves on a scouting trip to Kansas City to check out the opportunity, we have to admit our first impression was questionable. Starting with the airport and what seemed like the hottest day of the year, we changed our opinion once we started to drive around with our Group O’Dell agent, Michelle Sparks. We found that the small / big city feel of Kansas City was similar to our beloved Louisville.
Eric: The potential of relaunching Alba’s art career here in KC was a major factor for our decision. Moving to a place that had a healthy network of artists as well as many opportunities for career development was a must and then on our first trip we realized KC had a mature but evolving artist community as well as artist lovers and supporters that would be important to her continued work.
Alba: Our agent, Michelle, was a big part of our consideration. She drove us around patiently in several areas to get a better feel for what housing would look like and she shared her own life and experience in a real way. Our time became less and less transactional and more relational minute by minute.
So we left Kansas City overwhelmed with everything that needed to be done to move our family of six to a new city.
Why did you ultimately choose the area you chose?
Eric: Prairie Village reminded us of a special place back in Louisville so we started there as our center point and considered Overland Park, Lenexa, Leawood and Shawnee. Slowly eliminating areas as we started to prioritize our criteria, we saw about 24 houses in 24 hours. Finally, we found a place close to 69 and 435 which keeps us close to everything and just happened to be 3 minutes to my new office. Without knowing it we really found the perfect spot.
Tell us about your family, pets and hobbies.
Alba: Our family has an artistic lifestyle. Eric is a musician by hobby and works in communication and design by career. I am a visual artist, illustrator and hopefully soon an amateur woodworker. Our oldest son, Hesed, is a professional drummer who started getting real gigs at the age of 8. Abigail, our daughter, loves to sing, paint and dance. Ian loves to draw and Eben seems to want to follow his oldest brother’s footsteps in drumming.
We have inherited fish in the beautiful pond in our backyard and we are hoping to add a 4 legged family member as soon as we settle into our new home.
We want to thank the Jimenez family for sharing their beautiful family with us. You can check out Alba’s illustrations in the children’s book, Meeting Munchie. Preorders available: https://rebeccacedillo.com/
