Yard Clean Up
Winter is coming to an end and as we take steps into the back yard, most of us realize that our yards are in need of a desperate clean up. Here is a short checklist of things to help get the yard prepared for April showers and May flowers.
- Prune away dead and damaged branches.
- Cut back and divide perennials as needed.
Prune flowering perennials to a height of 4–5 inches and ornamental grasses to 2–3 inches to allow new growth to shoot up. Where soil has thawed, dig up perennials, such as daylilies and hostas, to thin crowded beds; divide them, leaving at least three stems per clump, and transplant them to fill in sparse areas. - Rake out fallen leaves and dead foliage around plants and under bushes
- Prep Damaged Lawn Areas for Spring Seeding. Remove damaged or diseased turf to prepare for the seeding that should follow in a few weeks.
- Neaten Up Hardscape Surfaces. Rake escaped gravel back into the correct areas and refill joints between paver stones.
- Patch or replace and paint worn wood.

Large Item Pick-Up
This is the time of year that some of the cities in the KC metro offer free Large Item Pick-Up days. This is a great way to get rid of the things that you have purged from your Spring Cleaning that aren’t suitable to send to other organizations. For the cities that don’t offer the service anymore, you may find some other options for large item disposal. See the links below to find the schedule for your area of the city.
Overland Park – Large item pickup for Overland Park has been moved to the fall
Shawnee – East of Pflumm on the last Saturday in April and west of Pflumm on the first Saturday in May
Lenexa – Offers dumpster days. Spring dates are set April 8 & 9.
Olathe – Chargeable service that you can schedule
Merriam – April 20-24. Check site to verify date per neighborhood.
Kansas City, MO – Make appointments for bulky items
Roeland Park – Different options for scheduling or you can put out one bulk item per week.
