Feeling a little cooped up? We’ve got an excursion that we promise you’ll love – and is also a great way to safely distance and get your dose of vitamin D at the same time! We’re talking about taking a tour of Kansas City’s street (mural) art! Now is the perfect time to shoot some selfies or maybe create your own gallery wall of some pretty cool images.
Here are some of our favorites:
Start at 514 SW Boulevard to catch hometown crush Janelle Monáe painted by @zulupainter1, you can catch his work behind the building at 112 W 18th St too. By the way, these addresses are usually indicated by the front doors of the buildings, you may have to look around the building or closest alleyway for the art.
While we’re in the Crossroads, head over to Foxx Equipment Company at 411 SW Boulevard. Not only do they have the dopest “Love Kansas City” art in their parking lot that faces SW Boulevard – but you can also wander around and find more in the back of the building too. Local artist Scribe provides plenty of eye candy all around. If you’ve been Raised Royal, find a great spot behind the building, worthy of a good selfie or two.
Next to the Crossroads Hotel at 21st & Central, catch another mural and head up to the rooftop bar at the Crossroads for a break.
Novel KC not only offers some amazing cuisine at 1927 McGee, but you can catch a great Kodak moment on their swing in front of the restaurant. Pop over across the street and catch the beloved KC I’m So In Love with your sweetie.
Time to stop over at Emperial Brew Garden at 1829 Oak St. Good food, good craft beer and some great murals in the beer garden.
Between 19th & 20th & Cherry is one of the greatest murals downtown. This one screams for pics at every turn.
Chief’s Fans will love the Kingdom wall at 18th & Locust and the Mahomes Wall at 4128 Broadway. But while you’re at Grinders take a walk around the next few blocks. This is where you’ll find the best of Kansas City’s street art.
Art Alley is off 18th Street in the Crossroads Art District between Locust and Cherry. A must see!
17th St, between Locust and Cherry for pop comic art and back down Locust towards Grinders for every parking lot filled with the most eye popping, alien bugging, rhino driving whimsy on every corner.
Tips for your trip:
Go on a Saturday or Sunday morning or late afternoon when there are less cars in parking lots. Basically every wall noted here is the outside of a business and open to the parking lot. Don’t be afraid to hop on a scooter to get around the crossroads and downtown.
Some other stops right outside downtown and crossroads you’ll want to check out.
- 17th Summit
- 31st & Troost
- Wake Up And Live – 39th & Main (west)
- 40th & Main (east)
- Raised Royal 41st & Pennsylvania @tadcarpenter
- 40th St between Pennsylvania and Broadway
Finish your day with some BBQ at Joes on Mission or next door at Pizza Napoletana 2876 W 47th Ave. A perfect KC mural is right in the parking lot!
