Lake Olathe Park
191 N. Ward Cliff Drive, Olathe, KS 66061
A 170-acre lake surrounded by a 258-acre community park. The Swim Beach includes locker rooms, outdoor showers, and a floating obstacle course called the Aqua Park. The marina rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and pedal boats, and coolers with food and nonalcoholic drinks are welcome on the beach. Recent renovations added an upper event lawn, a spray ground, and an amphitheater that seats 1,500 with the lake as its backdrop.
Lake Lenexa (Black Hoof Park)
9053 Monticello Road, Lenexa, KS 66220
A 35-acre, deep-water lake inside the 231-acre Black Hoof Park. This one is built for a quieter visit: non-gas-powered boating only, with kayak and paddleboard rentals available April through October, plus fishing for catfish, crappie, bluegill, and bass. There’s no swimming here, but there are miles of trails, two playgrounds, and both a 9-hole and 18-hole disc golf course. The dam and spillway have actually won national engineering design awards, which is a strange thing to be proud of at a neighborhood park, but here we are.
Shawnee Mission Park & Lake

A 120-acre lake that’s one of the most popular boating and fishing spots in Johnson County. The park also has 11 shelters, nature trails, an archery range, a large off-leash dog area, and a disc golf course. It’s home to Shawnee Mission Park Marina, where you can rent canoes, pedal boats, and fishing boats in season, and to The Theatre in the Park.
Wyandotte County Lake & Park
91st Street and Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, KS 66109
This park features 1,500 wooded acres built around a 400-acre lake, with a marina, a kids’ fishing pond, a large playground, a bridle trail, an off-leash dog area, and an archery range. It feels like a rural retreat that happens to sit inside the city limits.
Smithville Lake
Near Smithville, MO, about 20 miles north of downtown Kansas City
A 7,200-acre lake with 172 miles of shoreline, making it one of the biggest recreational lakes in the region. Two full-service marinas offer boat rentals, and the lake supports boating, sailing, fishing, and swimming, alongside golf courses, campgrounds, and hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Park passes start at $5 per car, with separate fees for boating, camping, and golf.

This 1,133-acre park sits on the bluffs above the Missouri River, about 30 to 40 minutes northwest of downtown Kansas City. A 3-mile paved trail loops through the park, with several more miles of unpaved trails through the bottomlands. There’s a campground, an accessible scenic overlook, a dog park, and a trail that leads right into the historic town of Weston, so you can turn the hike into an afternoon.
Hillsdale State Park

Built around a 4,500-acre reservoir with 51 miles of shoreline, Hillsdale is the biggest body of water on this list.
