Meet Steve Hodes of Moonlight Decks

 

Moonlight Decks was created from a simple idea while building my deck a few years ago.  “Why not do something different on the posts?”  After trying out several different post caps, I noticed a serious lack of quality in all of them.  One night while talking with a friend who happened to be an artist, he told me to just go down to the foundry and make my own caps.

I had no idea I could even do that!

A couple of weeks later we had some patterns produced and our new post caps were made nice and thick right here in the USA!  Another chance idea, over a couple of beers on the deck, and we had soon figured out we could put a light into the caps.

A few minor changes to the cap and I now have a deck I can use at night, and the lights don’t even attract bugs like the flood lights do!  Plus they protect my posts from weathering.

I thought to myself, “There must be other people who would want these.”  So we started a website, www.MoonlightDecks.com , and a new business was born.

 What sets us apart from other deck lighting companies?  “Our products are designed to last so you don’t have to replace the units every other year.” Moonlight Decks, LLC, utilizes primarily local companies to provide the materials needed for the custom deck lights.   Ninety-nine percent of all assembly and materials for the custom deck lights are from local businesses including foundries, plexi-glass companies, machinists, and powder coating.

Made in the USA is very important to us. We also do low voltage lighting and deck lighting installations locally. Being a very small business allows us to create custom lights for customers when necessary, as well as provide impeccable service.

 When I’m not working, I enjoy coaching my two boys in soccer.  My wife, Neysa, and I also like to attend Sporting KC games and Comets games with the kids and friends.  We enjoy a lot of different sports and activities, including spending time out on the deck!
