Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption volunteers work tirelessly to save animals throughout the Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, metropolitan areas. The team has rescued nearly 1,100 dogs in just one year. The goal is to rescue 500+ more by year’s end.
These dedicated people work in five major capacities: rescuing animals from “death row” in the city animal shelters and transporting them back to Unleashed headquarters; vetting, rehabilitating and adopting the animals into loving homes; the outreach team rescues homeless, abused and abandoned animals from the inner-city while educating owners on their responsibilities and offering assistance to low-income pet owners; reacting to emergency medical situations such as dogs left on heavy tow-chains with embedded collars; and, emergency disaster situations such as hoarding and foreclosure situations .
Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas public animal shelters have extremely high kill rates. Unleashed goes into these shelters several times a week and rescues as many animals from “death row” as they can. Animals rescued from “death row,” animals found in the city, and those rescued from abused are all transported back to Unleashed headquarters.
All animals are fully vetted (micro-chipped, spay/neutered, vaccinated), given a safe and loving environment in which to heal, socialize and rehabilitate mentally, physically and emotionally.
Several times a week, the Unleashed outreach team visits low-income neighborhoods to assist and educate pet owners. In the past year, Unleashed has come across many situations which are continually maintained and monitored: dogs who aren’t regularly fed, whose water bowls are consistently empty, follow-ups for spay/neuter surgeries and follow-ups to make sure dogs are left on leads provided by Unleashed not being put back on heavy tow chains. The outreach team is crucial to keeping animals fed, watered, and from a life of continuous breeding through offering low-cost spay and neutering services.
Recently, the Unleashed team went into a foreclosed home and single-handedly rescued 33 dogs left to die. Included with these helpless animals were two newborn litters and a mother about to give birth. The dogs from this nightmarish hoarding and foreclosure situation were successfully vetted and are currently being rehabilitated as well as adopted into their forever homes.
All animals adopted from Unleashed rescue are fully vetted and microchipped before going home!
There are many ways to get involved and to help such as hosting a fundraiser, facilitating a donation drive, volunteering at the shelter or remote adoption events!
