I’ve undertaken a few major renovations in my life. 2 kitchens, 3 bathrooms, a basement finish and even built a home from beginning to end. I’ve always been thrilled with the finished product but there is a lot you should know about the process before you decide to jump in.
We often speak to clients who aren’t sure if they should renovate or redesign so let’s look at the difference. Redesign is what we like to do about every couple of years or so to certain spaces. Maybe change the paint color of a room, put up new curtains or pillows or change a light fixture or flooring. These are the things that keep your home fresh and current. They are the easiest things to do with your time and budget.
A renovation on the other hand is an opportunity to examine function as well as making the space current. When you go to design a space that is perhaps unfinished or you completely change the layout of a kitchen or bath (both of which we’ve done) think about the perfect use of space. What do you want your end result to be? By tearing down walls or adding square footage, adding storage, or changing a window placement you can really create effective function.
One thing can definitely lead to another as with our recent bathroom renovation. We thought this was a perfect time to change the placement of the door to an adjacent hall closet making it easier to access the entire closet rather than the half that was accessible. We also added more lighting in the space along with dimmers. Those slight changes have made a huge difference in function.
A renovation can also provide that much needed update to a tired space but time and money will be greatly considered for the extent of a renovation. What is important is that you take the time to consider your needs and desires for the space as well as your budget before deciding how to proceed and call us first for parameters in keeping your project in line with current market demands.
